image If you’re looking for great WordPress hosting, then you should first understand what a good WP host should offer. It all comes down to three very important things:

  • PHP & Apache Servers – Make sure your web host supports the latest version of PHP (a programming language) and has Apache web servers. Preferably, look for a web host that runs on the Linux operating system instead of a Windows operating system. Getting this right the first time will save you a LOT of hassle later on.
  • Fantastico / cPanel – Often referred to as a “1-Click WordPress Installer”, Fantastico is a free script bundled together with the cPanel manager software. cPanel is important so you can do regular tasks like setting up email accounts all by yourself, and Fantastico is just one function in your overall cPanel account.
  • Redundant Backups – Anything can go wrong at any time, and if you’ve been blogging long enough you would have probably experiences crashes and data loss. Although you can easily get certain WordPress plugins that create automatic backups for your WordPress blog, it does not backup any files not created or used by WordPress. A web host that offers automatic backups will help you sleep better at night, knowing your entire account is secured.

WordPress hosting is really simple, but a lot of web hosts just aren’t doing enough on their part to make it even easier.

The Backup Wizard in cPanel is a nifty tool that will guide you on what to do when creating or restoring backup files. This is especially useful if you’re unfamiliar with creating and restoring backups as most steps are automated.

backup-wizard-01

Creating or restoring backups can be done in three steps as shown in the image below.

backup-wizard-02

When creating a backup, you have the option of creating a full backup, or create specific backups

backup-wizard-03

It will then let you decide where to store the backup.

backup-wizard-04

On the other hand, when restoring backups, you will be given the option to select what you want to restore, as shown in the image below.

The resulting page when you select either of the three will be an upload form wherein you can select the backup files from your computer.

The backup function allows you to backup, restore and download all your files and databases. It is advisable to backup your files at least once a day so that when your hosts’ servers crashed, you will have an available backup that you can restore.

backups-01

Clicking on the backups icon, you will get redirected to a page wherein you can generate a full website backup, which includes all the files and databases, email accounts, stats, etc.

backups-02

You also have the option to download only specific parts (files only, database only, etc). Downloading Home Directory will let you save a copy of all files that are under your account.

Downloading databases will let you save a copy of your database. If you have multiple database in your account, you will need to download each one.

backups-03

You also have the option to restore individual backups as shown below. If your have backup files of the home directory, you can use the “Restore a Home Directory Backup” upload function. If you want to restore a database, use the Restore a MySQL Database upload function.
